Cette oeuvre apprtenait sans doute au décor d'une pièce. L'oeuvre sera attribuée à Paolo Uccello, à partir d'une mention de Vasari qui décrit un tel tableau dans la maison de Giuliano da Sangallo à Florence, en le donnant, en 1550, à Masacio puis, en 1568, à Uccello. Il s'agit certainement d'une création plus tardive reproduisant d'anciens portraits. L'inscription qui identifie Giotto, Paolo Uccello, Donatello, Antonio Manetti et Filippo Brunelleschi, au bas du tableau, est postérieure à sa date d'exécution.
