 | Description | |
This work represents a well-dressed woman, seated at an outdoor cafe, drinking a glass of beer and looking at an illustrated magazine. Here, Manet seems to have poked fun at the tradition of painting solitary female readers as muses; there nothing expressive about the model's face, and the artist has made it quite clear that her magazine is filled with nothing but pictures. In style this is among Manet's most Impressionist paintings, its brushwork clearly intended to convey this Parisian scene as if viewed at a glance by passerby.
