Description

By 1903, Monet had decided to paint his pond as he looked down at it, excluding the banks or any horizon whatsoever except reflections of trees and sky on its surface. Exasperated by the challenge, Monet destroyed many canvases, repainted others over and over, and postponed several scheduled exhibitions before presenting forty-eight variations, including this painting, in an historic exhibition at the Durand-Ruel Gallery, in Paris, in 1909.
