Monet spent the fall of 1886 painting on Belle-Ile, a largely undeveloped island off the coast of Brittany. He was most attracted to the C?te Sauvage, the southwestern coast of the island characterized by steep cliffs and rocky outcroppings. Outfitted in protective gear, Monet withstood both rain and hail storms in order to represent the dramatic effects of the weather on the sea. This painting is one in a series that depicts rock at Port-Goulphar.
