Description

These two paintings originally formed a devotional diptych in which the owner was depicted in prayer to the Virgin and Child, who occupy the same domestic interior as he. Unfortunately, the portrait of the donor has suffered damage over time. Displayed here is the better-preserved reverse, with Saint Anthony, the donor's patron saint, painted in monochrome tones to resemble stone. This illusionistic treatment of the reverse emphasizes the nature of the folding diptych, which traditionally featured a bright, precious interior and a more solid, somber exterior. Both panels are in their original frames, although that of the Virgin and Child has been stripped of its gilding.
