 | Description | |
This portrait would have served as a document of a marriage. Rorbach's name, age, coat of arms, and the date are painted on its back, and it was originally paired with a portrait of his wife, Katherina Knoblauchin, which is now in the National Gallery of Ireland. The two portraits shared the same background a fanciful mountain landscape. Faber, who worked in Frankfurt-am-Main, specialized in such portraits depicting the patrician elite of this prosperous city. In the early sixteenth century, the many courts and free cities of Germany encouraged a flowering of artistic activity.
