 | Description | |
These panels formed the wings of triptych, or three - paneled folding altarpiece, whose center (now in the Mus?es Royaux des Beaux - Arts, Brussels) shows the Virgin and child enthroned under an elaborate architectural canopy. The two elegant saints can be identified by their attributes : Catherine by the wheel upon which she was tortured and the sword with which she was martyred, and Barbara by the tower, where her father sought to keep her safe from suitors. The reaching action of the Christ Child in the Brussels panel and the ring Saint Catherine holds indicate that Catherine's mystical union with Christ is the subject of the altarpiece.
