European Painting Painting (Scène intérieure)
Material : Oil on canvas
Date : near 1870
Area related : France
|
| Description | | |
In a shadowy studio interior, a graceful model in period costume converses with a man while a painter in the background is silently absorbed in his work. The intimate, lyrical scene, enlivened by vigorous brushwork and shimmering highlights, suggests the influence of such French Rococo painters of the 1700 as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and signals Daumier's departure from his more famous satirical work. The dark coloring and lack of clearly defined features, however, are typical of his painting style.
