Description

Carpeaux, a close friend of the painter Jean-L?on G?r?me (1824-1904), portrayed the artist in a realistic though highly Romantic way. His hair is tousled and his gaze is weary yet visionary. The bust abruptly terminates in an irregular, jagged edge, like a fragment of ancient sculpture that has survived the ravages of time. The head looms large above the chest, precariously set atop a conventional socle. This disembodiment symbolizes the struggling and creative spirit-the Romantic view of artists, musicians, and poets.
