Gemito, a nameless orphan at birth (his name means "born," from the Italian "genito"), developed an artistic style of intense psychological realism. He often chose everyday subjects, focusing on life in the streets of Naples, that he depicted with an earthy and sensual beauty of form. According to classical legend, Medusa was the beautiful daughter of sea gods whom Athena transformed into a monster with snakes for hair and eyes that could change men into stone. Gemito's choice to portray her reflects his lifelong preoccupation with revealing the beautiful in the ugly.
