Description

An English landowner and country gentleman, John Whetham (1731-1781) poses here in a free adaptation of a Hungarian cavalryman's uniform. Portrait sitters frequently wore fancy costumes such as this in an attempt to outlast changing fashions. The artist's experiments with the effects of artificial illumination may explain the unusual yellow patches on the subject's face, which produce a sculptural quality when seen by candlelight.
