 | Description | |
This beautifully preserved work exemplifies the nocturnal landscapes for which van Neer was famous. The fiery glow of the moon reflects dramatically on the water, etching the shadowy forms of leafy trees and reeds with silver and orange. The artist here depicted an identifiable landmark on the Amstel River, the Cast Kostverloren ("lost earnings"), whose name refers to the money spent repairing it.
